Alex Di Battista, Ph.D.
Bridging domain expertise and Bayesian statistical modelling for clear, actionable data interpretation.
My Approach
I specialize in Bayesian statistical modelling, encouraging a focus on the underlying data-generating process to produce simple, interpretable results. Unlike traditional statistical frameworks that rely on point-and-click software and arbitrary statistical significance testing, my approach harnesses domain expertise to develop custom statistical models. My goal is to help provide interpretable and actionable results from data.
How I can help
-
Spans all areas of research where statistics is involved, including study design, data collection, data cleaning, data simulation, scientific modelling, statistical modelling, model creation, results interpretation and communication.
-
I offer personalized online mentoring services for students, statisticians, data scientists, and researchers. Through one-on-one coaching, I provide practical advice and support to help you develop and improve your statistics skills, preparing you for your chosen career path.
-
I can create custom courses or talks involving Bayesian statistics, for all levels of current understanding.

About Me
I hold a Ph.D. in Medical Science from the University of Toronto, where my research centered on using blood biomarkers to characterize alterations in the immune system in response to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). During my postdoctoral work at the University of Toronto, St. Michael’s Hospital, and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, I expanded my investigations to include the biological underpinnings of clinical conditions such as sport concussion, post-traumatic stress disorder, addiction, and other mental health disorders.
Throughout my academic journey, I grew increasingly frustrated with traditional statistical approaches which I found to be limited and rigid, often failing to provide actionable and interpretable conclusions from my data. This led me to discover Bayesian statistics, which made it more accessible for me to move beyond null hypothesis significance testing to flexible statistical modelling. The main reason I gravitated to this approach is because it became simpler to leverage domain expertise and focus on the underlying data-generating processes to derive meaningful insights from data.
Today, as a scientist and applied statistician with experience in academia, government and industry, I employ Bayesian methods to create tailored statistical models that deliver clear and actionable conclusions from datasets. My work aims to bridge the gap between rigorous scientific inquiry and practical, real-world applications.
Testimonials
“Before working with Dr. Di Battista, our team faced significant challenges in making sense of our complex data sets. We needed a robust statistical approach to accurately interpret our data and answer the specific questions we had about our problem set. Dr. Di Battista brought a deep understanding of Bayesian statistics to the table, which revolutionized how we approached data analysis. In particular, his expertise in performing Bayesian latent class analysis using STAN was instrumental in uncovering the underlying structure in our DMT questionnaire data. This approach not only clarified our results but also provided novel insights that we hadn't anticipated. Working with Dr. Di Battista was both enlightening and seamless. His ability to break down intricate Bayesian models and tailor them to our specific research needs was truly impressive. I highly recommend his services to anyone looking to elevate their data analysis capabilities.”

“Deciding on the right approach is the first and crucial step for any data analysis project. Alex’s deep and wide knowledge is particularly useful to help you understand how to tackle a given problem. Not only did he help me get on the right track more than once, he always proposed a complementary approach for sensitivity analysis and simulated everything before even getting to the data. The rest of the process is as meticulous and professional. Alex’s integrity always gives me a sense of security that I have found the right steward for my precious data. If you want “results”, there are many people to choose from; if you want a process that provides the closest approximation to the state of nature that produced your data – there are few people like Alex.”
